Fencing quotes in Maitland for Colorbond, timber and pool fences

Fencing Maitland takes enquiries for Colorbond and timber paling fences, pool fences, side and driveway gates, front fences, fence repairs and rural fencing across the City of Maitland and the lower Hunter: East Maitland and Tenambit, Rutherford and Telarah, Thornton and Ashtonfield, Chisholm and Gillieston Heights, Lochinvar, Morpeth and Bolwarra, and Kurri Kurri.

The work is done by licensed fencing contractors who carry out that type of job. The contractor who quotes is the business that builds the fence, and their name and licence number go on the quote.

Maitland sets a lot of the job: new estates with steel fences between every yard, Federation and Victorian streets where front fences fit the house, river flats where a fence has to let floodwater through, and acreage that needs post and rail or wire.

Fencing services in Maitland

Back and side boundaries, pools, gates and front fences in town; post and rail and wire on acreage.

  • Colorbond fencing, Maitland: fencer checking a new steel fence post for plumb with a long spirit level

    Colorbond fencing

Colorbond steel fences on back and side boundaries: steel sheets slotted between steel posts set in concrete, usually 1.8 m high, in colours such as Monument, Woodland Grey and Basalt, with lattice or slat extensions and matching gates. A quote starts from the length, the height and what has to come out first.

  • Timber fencing, Maitland: fencer nailing hardwood palings to a new lapped and capped fence behind a cottage

    Timber fencing

Timber paling fences in treated pine or hardwood: palings butted or lapped on two or three rails, with a capping board along the top and a plinth at the base. Lapped and capped hardwood suits the older streets around East Maitland and Lorn. Send the length, height and timber.

  • Pool fencing, Maitland: fencer adjusting the self-closing hinge on a black aluminium pool gate

    Pool fencing

Pool fences and gates: frameless and semi-frameless glass, aluminium tubular and steel, with self-closing, self-latching gates. A NSW pool barrier has to meet the Swimming Pools Act standard, so the quote should cover the height, gaps, gate latch and the climbable zone around it.

  • Gates, Maitland: fencer fitting a latch to a new timber side gate beside a red-brick home

    Gates

Side gates, double driveway gates and sliding gates in timber, steel sheet or aluminium slats, hung on heavy hinges with latches that close. Sagging gates can be rehung, braced or rebuilt. Measure the opening and say which way it should swing or slide; a gate motor's wiring is separate electrical work.

  • Fence repairs, Maitland: fencer digging out a rotten post footing beside a leaning timber paling fence

    Fence repairs

Leaning fences, rotten or snapped posts, broken rails and palings, steel sheets bent in a storm and gates that won't latch. Posts are replaced in new concrete and the fence is straightened without rebuilding the whole run. Photos of the damage help with the price.

  • Rural fencing, Lochinvar: fencer fixing a rail to a new timber post and rail fence across a paddock

    Rural fencing

Post and rail, plain and barbed wire, ringlock and hinge-joint fences for acreage and rural-residential lots around Lochinvar, Largs, Louth Park and the river flats, with farm gates and horse-safe options. Tell us the length, the stock and the ground.

  • Front fences, Maitland: fencer fitting a picket to a new white timber front fence at a Victorian cottage

    Front fences

Low front fences and gates: timber pickets, steel and aluminium slats, and fences to suit the cottages and Federation homes of Central Maitland, East Maitland and Morpeth, where heritage rules can apply. Say the length, the style and whether the house is in a heritage area.

Fencing on Maitland's floodplain and in its heritage streets

Parts of Maitland are on the Hunter River floodplain. On a "flood control lot", shown on the council planning certificate, a fence in a residential zone isn't exempt development, so it needs approval, and in a mapped floodway Maitland's DCP asks for "open type fencing that does not restrict the flow of flood waters". Council's draft flood study update is open for comment until 23 November 2026.

Maitland has seven heritage conservation areas: Aberglasslyn House, Bolwarra, Central Maitland, East Maitland, Lorn, Morpeth and Regent Street. Front and road-frontage fences there need approval, and the DCP asks for open front fences no higher than 1.2 m that suit the house, such as timber pickets.

Exempt fences also can't use barbed wire or an electric fence in residential zones. Choosing a fencing contractor in Maitland

Six things to check, whether it's a new boundary fence or one sagging gate.

  1. The licence and what it covers

Fencing over $5,000 needs a NSW contractor licence that covers fencing. Check the name and number on the NSW Government's licence check. See how to check a fencer's licence.

  2. A written quote and contract

Over $5,000 the law requires a written contract with the licence number, and over $20,000 a full contract and home building compensation cover. Deposits are capped at 10%.

  3. The fencing notice first

On a boundary, agree the fence and the cost split with your neighbour, or serve a fencing notice, before work starts. See dividing fences.

  4. Fibro comes down safely

An old fibro sheet fence may contain asbestos. More than 10 m² needs a licensed asbestos removalist. See fibro fences.

  5. Services located before digging

Ask whether underground cables and pipes will be located before post holes are dug, through Before You Dig Australia.

  6. Who takes the old fence away

Removal and disposal of the old fence, concrete footings and offcuts should be in the price, or quoted separately.

Fencing questions from Maitland homeowners

Costs, neighbours, heights, flood and pools: the questions that come before a fence goes up.

How much does a Colorbond fence cost in Maitland?

No Maitland fencing business publishes a price. A NSW quote marketplace gives "$85-$150/m" installed for a 1.8 m Colorbond fence (The Quote Yard, August 2026, GST not stated), and a Sydney contractor $100 – $160 a metre including GST. See Colorbond fence costs.

Who pays for a dividing fence in NSW?

Usually both neighbours equally, for a sufficient fence, under the Dividing Fences Act 1991. The owner who wants the work serves a fencing notice with the boundary, the type of fence and the estimated cost, and the neighbour isn't liable for work done before it. See dividing fences in NSW.

Do I need council approval for a fence in Maitland?

Not for most side and rear fences up to 1.8 m, or front fences up to 1.2 m and at least 20% open, which are exempt development. A fence needs approval on a flood control lot, on or beside a heritage item's lot, or on a road frontage in a heritage conservation area. See fence height and approval rules.

Can I build a fence on flood-prone land in Maitland?

Yes, with approval if the lot is a flood control lot: in residential zones a fence there isn't exempt development. In a mapped floodway, Maitland's DCP asks for open fencing that doesn't restrict flood flow. See fences on flood-prone land.

Does a fencer need a licence in NSW?

Yes, for work worth more than $5,000 including GST: fences and gates built with a home are residential building work, so the contractor needs a licence that covers fencing. Check it on the NSW Government's licence check. See checking a fencer's licence.

My old fence is fibro. What now?

Treat it as asbestos until a test says otherwise. More than 10 m², about 5.6 m of a 1.8 m fence by our arithmetic, must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist, and the sheets must never be water-blasted. See fibro fences and asbestos.

How high does a pool fence have to be in NSW?

At least 1.2 m, with no gap over 10 cm under it or between its bars, and a 90 cm zone outside it kept clear of anything climbable, according to the NSW Government's guide for pool owners. See pool fencing.

Can I build my own fence?

Usually, yes: an owner doing residential building work on their own land is exempt from the licence rules, and an owner-builder permit is only needed for work over $10,000 that also needs development consent or a complying development certificate.

Can several fencing jobs be quoted together?

Yes. A new back fence, a side gate and a few repairs on the front fence are often quoted together. List each job with its length or size in your enquiry.

Which areas are covered?

The City of Maitland and the lower Hunter: East Maitland, Rutherford, Thornton, Chisholm, Gillieston Heights, Lochinvar, Morpeth and Bolwarra, out to Kurri Kurri, Beresfield and Raymond Terrace.
