Gates: what gets built and fixed
A gate takes more load than any panel of fence, so the posts, frame and hinges matter more than the infill. Measure the opening between the posts or walls, and say which way it should open.
Colorbond and timber side gates
Single pedestrian gates for the side passage, framed in steel or timber and clad to match the fence, often in the same Colorbond sheet and colour, with a latch that can be opened from both sides or locked.
Double driveway gates
A pair of swinging gates across the driveway on heavy posts, with a drop bolt into the ground to hold one leaf.
Sliding gates
A gate that runs along a track or cantilevers off the posts, for driveways too steep or short for a swinging gate. A motor and its wiring are separate electrical work.
Rehanging and repairs
Sagging gates are rehung on new hinges, braced so they stay square, or rebuilt, and latches replaced or realigned so the gate closes properly.

Checked 28 October 2026. No Maitland business publishes gate prices, and we found no published price for a manual sliding gate in NSW. North Shore Fencing and Gates' Sydney guide (2025) includes GST and prices automation separately. The Quote Yard's NSW timber guide (8 September 2026) doesn't state GST. What's The Damage's national figures (October 2026) are for manual gates and include GST.
A gate's price depends on its width, the material, whether new posts are needed and the hardware. Driveway and sliding gates cost far more than a single side gate.
Pool gates and the NSW barrier rules
A gate in a pool fence has to swing away from the pool, close by itself from any position and latch without help. See pool fencing for the NSW rules.

Questions about gates in Maitland
Why does my gate keep sagging?
Usually the hinge post is leaning, the hinges are too light, or a timber gate has no diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge up to the latch side. The fix depends on which, so send photos.
Can a gate be made to match a Colorbond fence?
Yes: a steel frame clad with the same sheets, in the same colour, is the usual way.
Can you automate a driveway gate?
The gate itself can be built to take a motor, but the motor's power supply and wiring are electrical work for a licensed electrician.
Which way should a side gate swing?
Usually into the property, so it doesn't open over the path or a neighbour's land. A pool gate always swings away from the pool.
