Pool fences: glass, aluminium and the gate
A pool fence is a child-resistant barrier between the pool and the house, the yard and the neighbours. The quote depends on the metres of fence, the style, the surface it's fixed to and the number of gates.
Frameless glass
Toughened glass panels held by spigots or channels, with no top rail, so the pool stays in view. Spigots are core-drilled or bolted into concrete or a stone coping; glass gates use glass-mounted hinges and latches.
Semi-frameless glass
Glass panels between slim aluminium posts, usually cheaper than frameless glass, with a framed gate.
Aluminium tubular
Powder-coated aluminium panels with vertical bars, on posts set in concrete or bolted to paving: the common choice for an affordable barrier and on lawn.
Pool gates
The gate is where most barriers fail. It has to swing away from the pool, close by itself from any position and latch without help, with the latch out of a small child's reach.

Checked 28 October 2026. No Maitland business publishes pool fence prices. Both glass publishers are Sydney contractors and include GST: North Shore Fencing and Gates' 2025 guide, and Glass Balustrade Authority's May 2025 guide, which includes AS 1926 compliance and prices gates separately. The Quote Yard's NSW pool guide (25 February 2026) doesn't state GST. A pool barrier's certificate of compliance comes from the council or a registered certifier, not the installer.
A pool fence is priced per metre plus each gate, and the surface matters: core-drilling spigots into concrete or stone costs more than posts set in lawn. The pool fence cost guide has the full price tables.
NSW pool fence rules a new fence has to meet
Under the Swimming Pools Act 1992, the NSW Government's guide for pool owners says a pool needs a child-resistant barrier at least 1.2 m high, measured from finished ground level, with no gap over 10 cm under it or between its bars. Nothing climbable may sit within the 90 cm non-climbable zone outside it. Gates open away from the pool and close and latch by themselves.
A boundary fence that forms part of the barrier has to meet the same rules, and the pool owner pays for the work needed to make it comply. Our sister site's NSW pool fence regulations guide covers the measurements, the gate latch, the Australian Standard for your pool's age and certificates for a sale or lease.

Who can build a pool fence in NSW?
A pool fence worth more than $5,000 including GST is residential building work, so it's built under a contractor licence that covers it: fencing, glazing or joinery for glass, metal fabrication, or swimming pool building, which includes the safety fencing with a new pool. Check the category on the NSW Government's licence check before you sign.
Inspecting a pool barrier and issuing a certificate of compliance is separate work, done by the council or a registered certifier, not by the fencer.

Questions about pool fencing in Maitland
How high does a pool fence have to be in NSW?
At least 1.2 m from finished ground level, with no gap over 10 cm under it or between its bars, according to the NSW Government's guide for pool owners. The 90 cm zone outside it has to stay clear of anything a child could climb.
Is a glass pool fence allowed in NSW?
Yes. Glass panels meet the same height and gap rules as any barrier, and glass gates need the same self-closing, self-latching hardware.
Can my boundary fence be part of the pool fence?
Yes, if it meets the barrier rules on the pool side. Under the Swimming Pools Act, the cost of making a dividing fence comply with the pool rules falls on the pool owner, not the neighbour.
Who issues a pool fence certificate?
The council or a registered certifier, after inspecting the barrier. A certificate of compliance is valid for 3 years, and you need one (or another listed certificate) to sell or lease a home with a pool.
Does an inflatable or above-ground pool need a fence?
Yes, if it can be filled to a depth of 300 mm or more: the NSW Government's guide for pool owners says portable and inflatable pools that deep fall under the barrier rules, as spas do.
